Asymmetric Breasts
in Indianapolis, Indiana
Indianapolis board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata performs breast surgery to correct all forms of asymmetric breasts, including tuberous breasts or tubular breasts, on his patients in Indianapolis and Carmel, Indiana.
Correction of asymmetric breasts begins with the understanding that no woman has two identical breasts. Therefore, some degree of breast asymmetry is normal.
The simplest form of asymmetric breasts is a greater than normal difference in breast size or breast volume. There may also be differences in breast shape and nipple position, but these differences are usually subtle. This type of asymmetric breasts can be corrected with a breast augmentation using different breast implant sizes, and either silicone implants or saline implants can be used.
As the problem of asymmetric breasts becomes more advanced, noticeable differences in breast shape and breast size are present, and there is often some sagging. In addition to using different size breast implants, usually with silicone implants, a breast lift may be needed as well. It is often preferable to do the breast augmentation first and allow the breast implants to settle into their final position and breast size before making a decision on the need for a breast lift.
In the most advanced form of asymmetric breasts, one breast has not developed at all, the nipple is very small and the chest wall muscle that lies under the breast is absent. This type of asymmetric breast is often called Poland’s Syndrome.
Breast reconstruction for Poland’s Syndrome is a two stage process. First, the large back muscle (latissimus dorsi) is transferred to the chest and an expander is placed under this muscle. The expander is then gradually filled with saline until the breast skin and muscle have been stretched and breast asymmetry has even been corrected. A silicone implant is inserted at a second stage.
Dr. Fata performs all breast surgery procedures for asymmetric breasts at his surgery center in Carmel, Indiana, near his Indianapolis office.
Tuberous Breasts in Indianapolis, Indiana
Another variant of asymmetric breasts occurs when one of the breasts has a tubular breast deformity. In a tubular, or tuberous breast, the base of the breast is very narrow, causing the breast shape to be like a cylinder or a tube. The nipple (areolar) skin is often enlarged and may be associated with herniation, or bulging, of the breast tissue under the nipple.
Treatment of tuberous breasts requires expansion of the breast base and placement of a large enough breast implant to improve breast asymmetry. Any nipple enlargement and breast herniation are corrected as well, which may be done at the same time or at a second stage, depending on the situation.
Breast surgery procedures for tuberous breasts are also performed at Dr. Fata’s Carmel, Indiana surgery center near his Indianapolis office.
As you can see, asymmetric breasts may be a relatively simple or quite complex problem involving much more than breast size. If you have asymmetric breasts, you need a board certified plastic surgeon with an understanding of the complexities of asymmetric breasts, and the skill and experience to bring you to a satisfactory outcome.
