Cleft Lip
in Indianapolis, Indiana
Dr. Fata uses tried and true techniques that have been successful in his hands over the years for cleft lips and associated deformities of the nose. The results that he has achieved, which can be seen on the before and after page, speak for themselves.
During your consultation, Dr. Fata will examine your child and review the options that are available, which will depend on a patient's age and whether or not there has been prior surgery. He will then make a carefully considered treatment recommendation. You will also meet with Donette, our Patient Coordinator, to view "before and after" photos of other patients, and to answer any additional questions that you may have. If necessary, Donette will also work with you to structure a financing option affordable to you. By the conclusion of your consultation, Dr. Fata and his staff will give you all of the information you will need to make an informed decision about cleft lip surgery.
A cleft lip occurs because the lip, which originates as three separate pieces early in pregnancy, fails to properly fuse. This failure may occur on one side (unilateral) or both sides (bilateral). Since the lip and nose form together, there are typically abnormalities of the nostril rim and tip of the nose.
The goal of cleft lip surgery is to close the hole caused by the cleft and simultaneously recreate the natural "cupid's bow" shape of the lip line. A second goal is to at least partially correct the abnormally positioned nostril rim. Dr. Fata uses the "rotation-advancement" technique to repair cleft lips, which allows the scar to be hidden along the natural vertical ridges of the lip. The following patient examples demonstrate the results that can be achieved with these techniques on both the lip and the nose, although individual results may vary.
At Renaissance Plastic Surgery, we have helped many patients correct the deformities associated with cleft lip. Our goal is to help our patient's look and feel better and more confident - inside and out.
