One of the main causes of aging in the face is a general loss of volume as the natural thin layer of fat covering the facial muscles begins to atrophy. Also, the effects of the environment (sun exposure and smoking) lead to a loss of collagen and elastic fibers. The result is a sagging of the facial skin and the appearance of skin folds and jowels. Some women also develop a hollowing out around the cheekbones that creates a gaunt appearance.

Fat injection is an excellent technique to replace volume and reverse these early signs of aging. Fat injection is based on the belief that restoring the soft tissue volume that has been lost will recreate your youthful fullness and contours. Although fillers such as Juvéderm® can also be used, fat injection may be preferable because much larger volumes are available and, in some cases, it may last for years.

Fat Injection Technique

Fat injection is a technique in which your own fat is taken from another part of your body, such as the tummy or buttocks, and injected to fill out wrinkles, folds and areas of hollowing on your face.

Advantages of fat injections include the ability to use much greater volumes than you could use with injectable fillers without being too expensive. Also, using your own fat eliminates the possibility of allergic reactions or rejection. One disadvantage is that some of the fat may be reabsorbed by your body in the first few months. Although fat injection is very safe, it is a surgical procedure and therefore a bit more involved than an in-office injection of a filler such as Juvéderm®. Advances in technique over the past several years have reduced the amount of fat that is reabsorbed, and once the fat has stabilized, it should last for years.

An alternative to fat injections is a new injectable filler called Voluma®. The material used in Voluma® is hyaluronic acid, the same substance that is used in other Injectable Fillers such as Juvéderm® and Restylane®. However, Voluma® is designed to be use in larger volumes and last longer, much like fat injections.
