One of the primary causes of aging in the face is a loosening of the skin and loss of elasticity over time, which is accelerated by sun exposure and smoking. At the same time, there is a loss of the volume of fat and collagen under the skin. This combination results in a general sagging of the facial skin, most noticeably around the mouth and cheeks.

Around the mouth, this sagging is seen as folds at the junction of the upper lip and cheeks, and at the corners of the mouth. Some women, particularly those who are thin in build, develop a hollowing out around the cheekbones that creates a gaunt appearance. Fat injections are an excellent technique to restore volume and reverse these telltale signs of aging.

The procedure

Fat injection is a technique in which a person's own fat is taken from another part of the body and injected with a needle and syringe to fill out wrinkles, folds and areas of hollowing on the face. It also can be used to fill out and plump up the lips.

Advantages

• The ability to use much greater volumes than one could use with injectable fillers without being cost prohibitive
• The elimination of any risk of rejection or allergic reactions

Disadvantages

• The risk that the body may reabsorb some of the fat, decreasing the amount of correction.
• Obtaining the fat, although a small surgical procedure, is a bit more involved than using an off-the-shelf product such as Restylane® or Artefill®.

Advances in technique over the past several years have reduced the amount of fat that is reabsorbed, and once the fat has stabilized, it should last for years.

The estimated total cost for a Fat Injections range from ($2,592-$1,852) which includes the surgeon's fee ($1,750), the surgery center fee, the anesthesiologist's fee ($842-$1,012) , and all follow-up care by Dr. Fata. In the case of multiple procedures, a discount may be applied. The exact cost can for fat injections can only be determined after meeting with Dr. Fata and the $50 consult fee will be deducted from the total.
