Products that are injected into wrinkles and folds are known as Injectable Fillers, and these fillers can restore your youthful appearance. Injectable Fillers can also add fullness to your lips. Collagen was the first Injectable Filler, but Collagen has been replaced by longer lasting substances, such as Juvéderm and Restylane. Each Injectable Filler has unique properties, and after your consultation with Dr. Fata, you will know which one will work the best for you.
Injectable Filler History-Indianapolis, Indiana
Collagen was the original Injectable Filler. It worked well but some patients were allergic to Collagen and, more importantly, it only lasted three months. Collagen has mostly been replaced by longer lasting Injectable fillers made of hyaluronic acid, such as Juvéderm and Restylane, which typically last 9-12 months.
Collagen is still available as an Injectable Filler, but it is used mostly as a component of Artefill®. The Injectable Filler Artefill® is made of collagen and microspheres of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Artefill® is the first filler that may last years instead of months because over time the collagen in Artefill® is replaced by your own collagen. Because Artefill® contains collagen, you will need a test dose for allergies one month before your first treatment.
Injectable Filler Uses-Indianapolis, Indiana
Injectable Fillers are often used for wrinkles and folds around the mouth that occur because of age and sun damage. They can also be used with Botox® for wrinkles caused by hyperactive muscles surrounding the eyes if the wrinkles are too deep to respond to Botox® alone.
If you are treating deep folds, any of the Injectable Fillers can be used. However, if you are treating more superficial lines, a softer product, such as Juvéderm®, should be used. Injectable Fillers can also add volume and fullness to your lips.
Injectable Filler treatments are performed as an office procedure with anesthetic (numbing) creams to minimize discomfort, although occasionally nerve blocks may be used. The results are seen immediately and will generally improve the first week.

Injectable Fillers cause a small amount of swelling, which usually lasts a couple of days. Occasional bruising may occur, which can be hidden with makeup. The amount of swelling and bruising will vary somewhat with the type of Injectable Filler that is used.
Juvéderm® and Restylane® injections around the mouth will generally last 9-12 months. In the lips, the duration is shorter, usually about 6 months, because of the constant muscle activity of the lips. When Juvéderm® and Restylane® are used around the eyes with Botox® they will last 9-12 months if regular Botox® injections are kept up. Artefill® may last for years but its’ use is limited to the deep naso-labial folds.
