Modern liposuction began when a French surgeon, Dr. Illouz, described fat removal with an instrument connected to a vacuum pump. Plastic surgeons in Indianapolis, Indiana and the rest of the country soon became enthusiastic about liposuction for fat removal, and before long liposuction became the most popular plastic surgery procedure in the United States.
If you are considering liposuction, call Indianapolis Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata at (317) 565-1009 to learn about the options available to improve your shape. During your consultation at Dr. Fata’s Indianapolis, Indiana office, he will explain all of the latest liposuction techniques and help you determine which type of liposuction is right for you.
Liposuction was originally recommended for removal of isolated fat deposits in young patients, but advances in safety and technique have allowed liposuction to be offered to older patients and those who are overweight as well.
Liposuction is the most requested plastic surgery procedure, along with breast augmentation, in Dr. Fata’s Indianapolis practice. If you have excess fat that won't respond to diet and exercise, then liposuction can help you when nothing else can.
Important Liposuction Facts
- Liposuction works because it removes unwanted fat and the cells that store fat. If you maintain your current weight and muscle tone, results should be permanent.
- Weight loss after liposuction can enhance your results by targeting areas that cannot be reached by liposuction, such as abdominal fat deep to the muscle.
- Some parts of the body, such as the hip rolls, respond better to liposuction than others because the skin is firm and elastic and will tighten more easily.
- Although noticeable improvement in body shape can be obtained in overweight patients, liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss.
Liposuction is performed under a general anesthesia as an out patient procedure, unless you are having a tummy tuck or “large volume liposuction”.
Liposuction is performed in two steps: First, fluid is injected to control pain, temperature and bruising using the "superwet" technique, a variation of “tumescent liposuction”. Then a hollow, metal tube (a cannula) is passed through a small incision and attached to a vacuum pump to remove the fat.
In most cases, Dr. Fata uses ultrasonic liposuction. In ultrasonic liposuction, the suctioning instrument, or cannula, sends out ultrasound waves which cause the fat cells to vibrate and leak fat. This allows for a less traumatic fat removal with less swelling and bruising.
The goal of liposuction is to give you the best possible shape for your body. Overly aggressive fat removal can take away your curves and feminine shape. As Dr. Fata often says, “It’s not what I take out but what I leave behind and how it looks that is most important.”
A compression garment, a medical grade “girdle”, is worn for four weeks to help skin tightening. The garment can be washed and you can take a shower the second day after surgery.
You will be encouraged to be up walking as soon as possible. The only restrictions in your activities will be no heavy lifting and no strenuous exercise for 2-4 weeks, depending on the extent of the liposuction. The amount of time needed off from work varies from 48 hours to one week, depending on the amount of liposuction.
You will return for follow-up visits with Dr. Fata at his Indianapolis office during the first month, and long-term liposuction follow-up will be arranged as well.
The cost of liposuction varies depending on the number of areas treated, and typically ranges between $3,400 and $6,700, which includes Dr. Fata’s fee, the anesthesiologist and surgery center facility fee, and all follow-up visits.
