How to Know if Your Implants Need to be Replaced

Woman and Plastic Surgeon Looking at Breast Implant Options

Breast implants are designed to add volume to the chest, improve breast symmetry, and generally enhance the bust. Some older breast implant models may produce these results for 10 or more years. Newer options, such as form-stable implants, may retain their shape and feel even longer, but no breast implant is meant to last forever.

How Long do Breast Implants Last?

The Mayo Clinic reports that around 20% of women have their breast implants removed within 10 years, though implants are designed to last for up to 20.  Newer implants, such as the cohesive gel (gummy bear) implant, may last longer and it is entirely possible for even older models to last for a lifetime, but by and large, you can expect to have to replace breast implants every few decades.

Will Breast Augmentation Leave a Scar?

Breast augmentation with implants will require an incision. Common breast augmentation incision options include around the nipple, in the crease between breast and chest, in the armpit, or in the belly button, all areas with features, such as skin tone variation or natural folds, which allow the incisions to be obscured.

Is Breast Lift Surgery Right for You?

Breast lift surgery is designed to lift sagging breast tissue for a perkier, firmer, and more youthful appearance. Indianapolis plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata was one of the first in the area to offer the short-scar breast lift technique. This technique requires only a small incision be made next to the nipple and is ideal for women with mild breast sagging.
