Hundreds of thousands of women choose to have breast augmentation in the United States every year. However, for many, concerns about breast cancer screening such as mammograms act as a deterrent to achieving their cosmetic goals.
Before you decline to have a procedure that can help you look and feel amazing, you need to understand that breast augmentation will neither increase nor decrease your risk for breast cancer. Neither will this procedure keep you from getting mammograms or interfere with breast cancer screening.
While breast implants may change the way your doctor screens for breast cancer, they will not prevent proper detection. In fact, there are a number of doctors in the Indianapolis area who specialize in cancer detection following breast surgery. We would be happy to provide you with a list of screening facilities in our area during your breast augmentation planning phase.

Breast Implant Placement
Breast enlargement will not prevent cancer detection, but certain surgical options may necessitate diagnostics outside of mammograms. If you choose to have your breast implants placed above the muscles in your chest, it may be necessary to have a CAT scan or x-rays to detect breast cancer. This is because above the muscle placement can obscure mammogram results and may be more prone to damage with this particular method of cancer screening.
To avoid this issue, Indianapolis breast surgeon Dr. Fata may recommend that you have your breast implants placed below the muscles in your chest. This placement makes cancer screening easier and may also produce a more natural-looking and feeling end result. During your initial consultation all of your breast surgery options will be discussed in full and those best suited to meet your needs will be determined.
