BOTOX® Cosmetic is approved for the treatment of forehead lines and creases. It can also be used to treat frown lines, alternatively known as “the 11s”, in between the eyebrows, creases and folds next to the eyes, known as crow’s feet, and smile lines at the corner of the mouth. BOTOX® Cosmetic can address skin laxity around the jaw, pebbly chin, and neck bands as well.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neurotoxin that blocks the signals between nerves and muscles, reducing the appearance of wrinkles caused by facial expressions, also known as “dynamic wrinkles.” It may also be used for medical treatments such as relieving migraines or reducing sweat.
How Long Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Last?
BOTOX® Cosmetic can last for three to four months. Because it does not destroy the connection between muscle and nerve, wrinkles will begin to reappear as the active ingredients wear off. It is possible to maintain results by seeking repeat injections every few months.
Alternatives to BOTOX® Cosmetic
Brow lift surgery eliminates forehead wrinkles and lifts the eyebrows. It may also assist in reducing the 11s. There is no surgical alternative for crow’s feet, though blepharoplasty may help to soften lines in some cases. Facelift surgery may also assist with lower and mid-face wrinkle reduction, though it is not designed to address this issue.
Dermal fillers add volume to the face and may offer similar results to BOTOX® Cosmetic. Although these are designed to address facial creases and wrinkles that are present when the face is at rest and will not reduce crow’s feet or forehead lines.
In short, neurotoxins like BOTOX® Cosmetic, Xeomin®, and Dysport® are often the best solution for dynamic wrinkles.
