Eyelid Surgery and Dry Eye Syndrome

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is used to improve the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. Upper eyelid surgery can be used to gently lift eyebrows and create a more alert appearance. Lower eyelid surgery can be used to eliminate puffy skin and dark circles from underneath the eyes, helping to produce a smooth, clear, and rested appearance.

Dry eye syndrome is a medical condition that occurs when the eyes cannot produce adequate tears to maintain moisture levels. There are myriad causes of dry eye syndrome, including medication use, environmental factors, and illness, that may prove persistent.

Eyelid surgery can cause temporary eye dryness. This is different than Dry eye syndrome.

Blepharoplasty and Dry Eyes

Dry eyes are a common side-effect of eyelid surgery. In fact, nearly 30% of blepharoplasty patients experience dry eyes during recovery. This is largely a result of not being able to blink as frequently during the recovery period.

Dry eyes caused by eyelid surgery should be temporary. Once you have healed, typically within two weeks, the issue should self-resolve. During the healing process, we can provide you with methods and medications to help address any discomfort. We will discuss this in greater detail during your initial consultation.

Does Eyelid Surgery Improve Vision?

Generally speaking, no, eyelid surgery does not improve vision. It is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of the skin around the eyes, not a vision correction treatment. However, if your vision is obscured by sagging eyebrows, an upper eyelid lift can certainly help.

Blepharoplasty is an effective way to improve vision when vision is blocked by sagging eyebrows or droopy eyelids. It can also help to produce a more youthful and appealing look to the entire middle portion of the face.
