Indianapolis plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata believes strongly in clear patient communication. It’s important you understand the details of your procedure, as it will de-mystify the process and ease your mind a bit.

In the case of BOTOX®, it’s a good idea to understand the mechanisms by which the compound works and eliminates the signs of age and wear on your face. Fortunately, it’s pretty simple.

Wrinkles in your face are caused by muscle contractions, and those contractions occur when your muscles receive signals from your nerves telling them to contract. The muscles tighten, and the results show up on your skin.

BOTOX®, which is a medically engineered version of the botulinum toxin, works by blocking the signals from your nerves. Once our Indianapolis plastic surgeon injects the compound into the treatment area, the muscles in that region will not receive contraction signals. Over a period of time, the muscles will relax and the wrinkles will smooth out.

This result is not permanent, and within three to six months (for most patients) the injection will wear off and your muscles will begin receiving the contraction signals. At this point you can return for another injection.
