When performed well, breast procedures like augmentation and lift, body procedures including tummy tuck and liposuction, and facial procedures such as eyelid surgery and facelift can have a profound impact on the appearance, confidence, and overall happiness of the patient. Performing these things well, however, is not something that is easy to do.

Due to the increased popularity of cosmetic procedures, a growing number of doctors are offering cosmetic services as part of their practice. Sadly, not all of these doctors have undergone the extensive training in the field of plastic surgery that is necessary to ensure optimal results. In fact, many of the doctors who offer aesthetic procedures have traditionally specialized in other fields of medicine, including family practice and OBGYN, and do not make plastic surgery a primary focus of their practice.

Doctors who do not make cosmetic procedures a primary focus of their practice are typically not board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This means there is no way to guarantee that they have received proper training, undergone plastic surgery residencies, and met the rigorous standards of quality and competency required by this medical certifying board. In other words: there is no way to tell if an un-certified doctor has the skills or experience necessary to perform a plastic surgery procedure.

What Does "Board Certified in Plastic Surgery" mean? A Closer Look at Board-Certification

American Board of Plastic Surgery CertificationThe American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only certifying board for plastic surgeons recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, the largest physician-led specialty certification organization in the United States. Board certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) guarantees that a plastic surgeon has undergone rigorous training in this specialized medical field and possesses the necessary experience and qualifications to perform your plastic surgery procedure with competence.

In order to become board certified, a plastic surgeon must commit to years of extensive training which includes:

  • Graduation from a verified and accredited medical school
  • At least one year internship in General Surgery
  • Three or more years of residency in General Surgery or a complete residency in a related sub-specialty, such as Ears, Nose & Throat-Head and Neck Surgery
  • Two to three year additional residency focused entirely on Plastic Surgery

After completing this training, a plastic surgeon must pass rigorous oral and written examinations and receive favorable peer reviews in order to become board certified – and even then, the surgeon is not free-and-clear. Continued certification requires re-application every ten years, during which patient results, testimonials, and other relevant factors are reviewed by a panel of peers.

These exacting standards and strict qualifications ensure surgeons certified by this board uphold the highest standards of patient safety, care, and results – and meeting these standards is exceptionally hard. There are fewer than 7,500 board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States.
