Every patient’s rhinoplasty recovery process will be slightly different, but there are a few common patterns you’ll notice, and steps you can take to ensure smooth healing. Right after your surgery, you can expect a headache or dull aching in the treatment area. Severe pain is uncommon. Most patients are able to switch from prescription pain medication to over-the-counter medication within a couple of days in order to control lingering soreness.
Congestion, caused by your nose’s internal swelling, is one of the most common post-operative side effects. This will gradually get better as the swelling begins to subside. If it interferes with your sleep, Dr. Fata recommends taking a light sleep aid for the first couple of nights. It is also helpful to avoid overly dry environments in the first few weeks. A saline spray and ointment can be used to control dryness on a daily basis.
Most of our patients need to take around a week off of work and other major life activities. About 5 to 7 days after surgery, you will return to Dr. Fata’s office to remove the cast on your nose and any stitches. After the cast has been removed, you should notice significant improvement in the appearance of your nose within one to two weeks. Dr. Fata will monitor your healing progress every step of the way to make sure your recovery is progressing normally.
