Tumescent vs. Traditional Liposuction

The traditional liposuction technique, pioneered in 1974, uses a cannula attached to a suction machine to remove stubborn fat deposits from the body. This technique may require general anesthesia for patient comfort and, because there are no assists, such as ultrasound or laser energy, greater force is often needed to loosen and remove fat.

The tumescent liposuction technique, also known as the wet technique, uses a medical solution containing xylocaine and epinephrine to prepare the surgical area. This solution numbs the treatment space and helps loosen and bulk-up fat deposits for easier and more complete removal.

Tumescent liposuction may help reduce risks for:

  • Tissue and muscle damage
  • Organ damage
  • Postoperative bruising and swelling
  • Postoperative pain

The tumescent liposuction technique can also reduce the overall recovery time.

More Complete Removal of Fat

With the traditional liposuction technique, fat deposits are manually loosened with the cannula before being removed. While this liposuction technique can be effective, it is also more likely to result in incomplete fat removal and may even produce lumpy or uneven spaces in the treatment area.

Tumescent fluid prepares fat for removal and creates a larger space within the body from which fat can be more thoroughly removed. The result is often a better contoured and more ideally defined treatment area.

Results from tumescent liposuction are permanent. The fat that is removed during this procedure cannot come back. If you take care of yourself, the results you get through liposuction at our Indianapolis office will last for a lifetime. The opposite is also true, however. If you fail to care for your body, new fat will accumulate and your results will be undone.

Maintaining Tumescent Liposuction Results

The best way to maintain the results of your liposuction procedure is through healthy living. This should include daily exercise with at least three hours of moderate to high-intensity aerobic output weekly and at least one session spent strengthening each major muscle group. If you are not savvy at the gym or if you just need help refining a routine, work with a personal trainer for a period of time after your liposuction procedure. This can help keep you safe while optimizing your routine for the most impressive results.

It can also help to work with a nutritionist. Healthy eating often means avoiding foods that come in packages, but creating delicious and healthful meals from whole food ingredients is not something that comes naturally to everyone. If you struggle with finding balance in your diet, a nutritionist can help personalize a plan that meets your dietary needs without compromising the joy of eating. In fact, many people find that shifting to healthy foods with the help of a nutritionist makes meal planning, preparation, and consumption much more enjoyable.

You will continue to visit Dr. Fata in the weeks after your procedure. During these follow-up visits, Dr. Fata will assess your recovery and answer any questions that may have arisen. He can also guide you towards programs and people who may be useful as you embark on your journey towards a more fulfilling and healthy life. The cost of these visits is included in your up-front and one-time liposuction fee. This can also be discussed in greater detail during your time in our care.
