If you are looking for a non-surgical way to correct facial wrinkles or add fullness to your lips, Juvéderm® may be the answer. Call Indianapolis Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata at 317-575-9152 to find out how Juvederm® and other non-surgical injections, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and Restylane®, can restore a more youthful appearance to your face.
Juvéderm® History
Juvéderm® is a product included in the class of injectable fillers, off-the-shelf materials used to fill out wrinkles and add fullness to the lips. The original Injectable filler was collagen, but collagen only lasted three months and occasionally caused allergic reactions. The latest generation of injectable fillers, including Juvéderm® and Restylane®, uses the material hyaluronic acid, which is a natural, complex sugar found in all living organisms, including your own.
Hyaluronic acid does not cause allergic reactions, which makes it very safe to use. It also attracts and absorbs water so the amount of improvement is enhanced during the first week after the injection.
Juvéderm® is different from Restylane® in that it is softer amd ,ay be slightly longer lasting because of the way the hyaluronic acid molecules are linked together. Juvéderm® can be used for superficial wrinkles because it is soft enough to give a smooth and natural result.
Juvéderm® Uses & Technique
Juvéderm® is often used for wrinkles and folds around the mouth that occur because of age and sun damage. Although BOTOX® Cosmetic is generally preferred for wrinkles caused by hyperactive muscles surrounding the eyes, Juvéderm® can be added if the wrinkles are too deep for BOTOX® alone.
The other main use of Juvéderm® is to add volume and fullness to your lips. Juvéderm® can also recreate the youthful ridge along the lipstick line so lipstick won’t “bleed” on to the lip skin.
Juvéderm® injections are performed as an office procedure with anesthetic (numbing) creams to minimize discomfort, although occasionally nerve blocks may be used. The results are seen immediately and will generally improve the first week. Dr. Fata only uses the Juvederm XC form of Juvederm®, which has lasts the longest and also has a numbing cream, Lidocaine®, to decrease the pain.
Juvéderm® Recovery & Results
Juvederm® causes a small amount of swelling, which usually lasts a couple of days. Occasional bruising may occur, which can be hidden with makeup. As the Juvéderm® attracts water between the cells, the amount of wrinkle correction around the mouth and fullness of your lips will continue to improve.
Juvederm® injections around the mouth will generally last 9-12 months. In the lips, the duration is shorter, usually about 6 months, because of the constant muscle activity of the lips. When Juvéderm® is used around the eyes with BOTOX® Cosmetic it will last 9-12 months if regular BOTOX® injections are kept up.
Juvéderm® Costs
The cost of Juvederm® is $595 per syringe, which includes all follow-up care by Dr. Fata. Unlike some offices, Dr. Fata does all Juvederm® injections himself.
