Excessive breast tissue in males is a condition known as gynecomastia. Derived from Greek and Latin, gynecomastia translates to “woman breasts” and is a condition that can have a profoundly negative impact on the appearance and self-esteem of those men it inflicts.
If you have excessive tissue in your chest that produces the appearance of female-like breasts, Indianapolis plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata can address the issue through male breast reduction. Utilizing advanced liposuction techniques, Dr. Fata can restore a masculine appearance to your chest and work to create a look that complements your physique and improves your self-confidence.
To schedule a male breast reduction consultation with Dr. Fata, please call Renaissance Plastic Surgery at 317-565-1009 today. Located in Indianapolis, our board-certified plastic surgeon welcomes men with gynecomastia from Carmel, Nobel, and all surrounding areas of Indiana.

Gynecomastia Risk Factors
Gynecomastia may be the result of a hormone imbalance or weight gain. It can be more common in younger adolescents and older men, though in the former group the condition tends to be self-correcting.
You are at risk for developing womanly breasts if you:
- Are over weight
- Are generally inactive
- Drink excessively
- Use anabolic steroids
Street drugs, such as marijuana, heroin, methadone, and amphetamines are also common causes of gynecomastia.
While the above risk factors are within your control, there are some risk factors that may not be so easily reversed. These include:
- Natural hormone changes
- Kidney failure
- Liver failure/cirrhosis
Certain medications and treatments may also increase risks for male breasts. Some of the most commonly prescribed are:
- Antianxiety medications
- Gastric motility medications
- Heart medications
- Tricyclic antidepressants
- Ulcer medications
If you are currently taking a medication that can contribute to enlarged male breasts, it may be necessary to discontinue use prior to your treatment. This is something that can be discussed with Dr. Fata and your prescribing physician as needed.
There is some evidence that herbal products containing tea tree or lavender may contribute to excess breast tissue in men. These herbal products can mimic estrogen in the body. Adolescent boys, in particular, should avoid products that list tea tree or lavender as active ingredients.
When you come to our Indianapolis plastic surgery office for a male breast reduction consultation, Dr. Fata will review your medical history, discuss the possible causes of your condition, and cover lifestyle changes that may be needed to ensure the success of your procedure.
Treatment for Gynecomastia
The most common treatment for gynecomastia is liposuction. Dr. Fata offers both tumescent and ultrasonic liposuction. Of these, ultrasonic is often the better choice for male breasts.
Benefits offered by ultrasonic liposuction include:
- Less trauma to surrounding tissue
- Lower risk of excessive bleeding
- Shorter recovery period
- Complete fat removal
Because ultrasonic liposuction emulsifies fat prior to removal, complete elimination of gynecomastia is much more likely. Ultrasonic liposuction can also greatly reduce the recovery period associated with male breast reduction.
In cases where gynecomastia is the result of glandular tissue, removal of this tissue will be essential for optimal results. During your initial consultation at our Indianapolis plastic surgery office, Dr. Fata will examine your condition, discuss all treatment options, and help you choose the one best for your needs.
Recovery from Male Breast Reduction
Recovery from male breast reduction is dependent on several factors including the type of treatment you have undergone, your body’s natural response to surgery, and how closely you follow pre and postoperative instructions. However, as a general rule, you should plan on taking two to five days off from work during your initial healing phase.
Following surgery, swelling and slight discomfort are common. Dr. Fata may suggest a compression garment for swelling. Over the counter medications are typically enough for lingering pain. Walks and other minimal impact activities can also help reduce swelling by increasing blood flow to the treatment area.
As pain dissipates and swelling subsides, bruising may linger. Some homeopathic remedies, such as arnica montana may help with this, but time and proper aftercare will be needed regardless. Instances of bruising are greatly reduced with ultrasonic liposuction.
Providing your job is not physically intensive, you should be able to resume normal work duties within one week of your male breast reduction surgery. More demanding labor and more progressive forms of activity may need to be avoided for up to six weeks, though many men feel confident returning to these demanding tasks within four. Dr. Fata will work individually with you and monitor your progress to help you determine when you can resume or take-up physically intense activities.
Full recovery from male breast reduction may take six to eight weeks, but results will be visible as soon as swelling subsides. Your results will be permanent if you take care to maintain them. Failure to care for your body after surgery will, however, likely result in a reoccurrence of the condition.
Good Male Breast Reduction Candidates
Male breast reduction is best for men with gynecomastia. Other conditions can often be treated through diet and exercise.
If you have gynecomastia, you may be a good male breast reduction candidate if you are:
- A nonsmoker in generally good health
- Able to take time away from work to recover
- Willing to follow specific pre and postoperative instructions
- Interested in adopting a healthy lifestyle
While interest in being healthy is not necessarily a prerequisite for male breast reduction, it is an essential component of maintaining results.
The best way to learn if you are a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery is through a private and confidential consultation with our Indianapolis plastic surgeon. Call us at 317-565-1009 to schedule your consultation today.
Paying for Your Procedure
We accept Visa and MasterCard for male breast reduction procedures. We also work with Key Bank in Indianapolis for competitive financing options for men who would prefer not to pay for the procedure out of pocket.
During your first visit and as needed after, our patient coordinator can review your payment options and help you chose those best suited to your situation. We can also discuss healthcare financing during these meetings to ensure all bases are covered and you are comfortable with your final decision.
Diet Following Male Breast Reduction
After your male breast reduction surgery, it will be important to focus on the foods you eat. Weight fluctuations can cause gynecomastia even after treatment, making it important that you manage your weight appropriately.
As a general rule, it is best to avoid processed foods, foods and beverages high in sugar, simple carbohydrates, and fatty proteins. These foods are linked not only to obesity but to heart disease and other health conditions that can interfere with leading an active lifestyle.
Instead of processed and fast food, opt for delicious options like:
- Fresh vegetables and fruits
- Nuts and seeds
- Lean proteins
- Complex carbohydrates
Eating healthy can open up an exciting world of tastes but may seem initially intimidating. It can be helpful to work with a nutritionist when first transitioning to a healthier diet, though resources such as cookbooks are also readily available.
Exercise After Gynecomastia Surgery
Frequent walks during your recovery period will help minimize swelling. As you recover, you can begin to amplify this type of exercise, walking more vigorously or with greater frequency. Within a few weeks of your male breast reduction procedure, you can begin incorporating more intense forms of exercise as well. These will help you maintain your gynecomastia surgery results.
Ideally, you should aim for 30 to 60 minutes of moderate activity every day. This can include:
- Walking or jogging
- Yoga or Pilates
- Group fitness classes
You needn’t get a gym membership or join a fitness studio to maintain male breast reduction results. Many daily activities can be performed in your own home or around your neighborhood. Better still, keeping active in this way will not only help you maintain your plastic surgery results, it can help reduce risks for serious and even fatal diseases and disorders such as hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes.
In addition to your daily exercise, it is a good idea to incorporate 90 to 120 minutes of more aerobic exercise weekly. This can include:
- Spinning classes
- Power or hot yoga
- Group sports
These types of exercise will help keep new fat from accumulating while assisting in sculpting the chest. You can further sculpt and tone your upper body by engaging in advanced forms of exercise such as:
- Weight training
- CrossFit or Boot Camp classes
- Endurance training
If you choose to engage in more demanding forms of exercise, it can be helpful to work with a personal trainer. However, simply maintaining male breast reduction results will not require this approach. Dr. Fata can answer any questions you have about this during your time in our care.
