If you are looking for a non-surgical way to correct facial wrinkles or add fullness to your lips, Restylane® may be the answer. Call Indianapolis board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata at 317-575-9152 to find out how Restylane® and other non-surgical injectable fillers can restore a more youthful appearance to your face.
Restylane® History
Restylane® is one of the products included in the class of injectable fillers, off-the-shelf materials used to fill out wrinkles and add volume to the lips. The original injectable filler was collagen, but collagen only lasted three months and occasionally caused allergic reactions. The latest generation of Injectable fillers, including Juvéderm® and Restylane®, uses the material hyaluronic acid, which is a natural, complex sugar found in all living organisms, including your own.
Hyaluronic acid does not cause allergic reactions, which makes it very safe to use. It also attracts and absorbs water so the amount of improvement is enhanced during the first week after the injection.
Restylane® is somewhat firmer than Juvéderm® and so may be better suited for deep folds in which layering of the injection can be done to fill out the folds.
Restylane® Uses & Technique
Restylane® is often used for wrinkles and folds around the mouth, especially the deep folds at the junction of the upper lip and cheeks. The other main use for Restylane® is to enhance or augment the fullness of the lips although Juvederm® is generally preferred because it is softer. Although BOTOX® Cosmetic is the first choice for wrinkles caused by muscle activity surrounding the eyes, Restylane® can be added if the wrinkles are too deep for BOTOX® alone.
Restylane® injections are performed in the office, using anesthetic (numbing) creams to minimize discomfort, although occasionally nerve blocks may be used. The results are seen immediately and will generally improve the first week
Restylane Recovery & Results
Restylane® produces some swelling, which usually lasts a couple of days. Occasional bruising may occur, which can be hidden with makeup. As with Juvéderm®, Restylane® attracts water between the cells so the amount of wrinkle correction continues to improve.
Restylane® injections around the mouth will generally last 6-8 months. If Restylane® is used around the eyes, it will last longer if regular BOTOX® injections are kept up.
Restylane® Costs
The cost of Restylane® is $595 per syringe, which includes all follow-up care by Dr. Fata. Unlike some offices, Dr. Fata does all injections himself.
